Portland City Guide

By Brookes Boswell of Shop Boswell

A new series where we ask friends of Cawley to share their favourite things to do in a place they live in or love.

I first met Brookes in 2018. At the time, we had just two stockists, a handful of followers and no website. It should surprise me that Brookes managed to find Cawley so early on, but it doesn't. That's what Brookes does. She has a wonderful eye for discovering independent brands and makers, bringing them together in a way that feels entirely her own at Shop Boswell, her store in Portland.

For the first in our series, Brookes shares some of her favourite places in the city she calls home.

Tell us about your shop.

The shop is in the central inner eastside neighborhood - formerly industrial and right on the cusp of the charming eastside residential neighborhoods. We’re in a charming old building with a classic old-fashioned retail feel. We get loads of southern light, which is much appreciated through a Portland winter.

We opened in 2016 after a search for a studio space for my hat business. I found this cute storefront and thought, now is as good a time as any to open a shop! I absolutely love clothes, I love product and I love helping folks find pieces that they love. There’s been a lot of change, a lot of ups and downs, but I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Your favourite quick lunch.

Coquine is a cute cafe tucked back into a residential neigborhood at the foot of Laurelhurst park. You have to know it’s there to find it. They serve coffee, pastries, light sandwiches, and have a selection of pantry items and bottled drinks. It’s an incredibly charming spot.

Your favourite weekend brunch.

I absolutely love a lingering weekend brunch at No Saint. They have amazing pastries, seasonal, vegetable forward dishes all cooked in a wood fired oven, and if I’m feeling up for it - a glass of wine from their thoughtful natural wine list.

An independent shop you love.

In our neigborhood are two shops that I always recommend. Una has an incredible selection of ceramics, handmade home goods, socks, jewelry and clothing. I always see something new that I want, the space is very warm and cozy, and the shop staff are lovely. Also close by is a vintage jewelry store called Oko. Jewelry is something best tried on in person, and they have lots of sparkley, shiny and sentimental vintage pieces to peruse. The owner has a great eye and I always love what they bring in.

A place to linger.

I spend a lot of time in Forest Park. It’s the urban forest within city limits in the United States. There’s loads of trails for hiking or running, the Japanese Garden and Hoyt Arboretum in the park, all right in the city. I’ve spent countless hours running, biking, and even hiking the full length of the Wildwood Trail (33 miles!) I’m so grateful that I have access to this much nature, just steps from my front door.

A place to spend a weekend morning.

Every Saturday morning my husband, dog and I go to the Portland farmers market to stock up on our groceries for the week. We’ll have a snack, grab a coffee, and peruse the stalls before making a decision about what we’ll cook the coming week. I love checking out what produce is coming into season and buying directly from our local farmers.

The best night out.

I’m not much of a nightlife person, but I love meeting up with friends at Duality Brewing. They have a unique and innovative take on beer (more like wine, less like an IPA). They share a space with Chisme which has incredible food. And the outdoor deck is a perfect spot to spend a summer evening.
